The Spread Offense – Running Game

When people hear »spread » they think of the death game. The truth is that the spread running game can be lethal. A few years back I coached at a college that made a rush to the Texas high school state championship match. We put the spread in not because we believed we’d dominate in the passing game but since we knew that the team could be a great running group.
I wonder how many truly understand all aspects of the offense. When done correctly it may be like a full court run4 and it will gradually wear the other team down. The game is an essential component of becoming a complete offense. Coaches need to rep running just as much or more than the passing game and a few understand this.

There are three basic schemes for the offense line to find out within zone, outside zone, and also the counter trey. On some level this may appear simple. Unfortunately all three concepts are tremendously different and often offense lines will fight to be good at all three.
The running back is usually put from playside. So for instance if a team is operating »2-Base » then the rear is going to be aligned into the quarterback’s left and will crossover and attack the 2 hole and is always looking for a cutback lane. The back should be thinking bend or bang and has to read on the run. Frequently the hole will develop backside and consequently no player should think they can take a playoff. Many times a back might end up backside and should the interior receiver isn’t performing his job his guy will make a touchdown saving tackle!
The foundation of the disperse running game is that the zone read. As the back crosses over the quarterback’s eyes have been on the backside end. In case the end remains disciplined or slow plays then it is an automatic give. Within this article I will concentrate on the responsibilities of the quarterback and Trainers and I will discuss lineup play in a subsequent article.
Again repetition is critical. Many quarterbacks will guess. They must read on the conduct and respond to what the defense is providing the offense. 2/3 foundation is the base running play for the spread offense. The quarterback counter trey works from base and should be learned together with 2/3 base.

Quarterback counter trey will seem like 2/3 base but there is no read. The quarterback does not have to ride the ball to back, just let him cross. Backside guard and tackle will pull. The shield will kick the playside end along with the tackle will seal onto the linebacker. Let me say here that head up »4″ techniques are hard to counter because it’s tough to execute a down block.

Among the most frequent mistakes by the quarterback is going to be for him to try and run wide. I guarantee this drama will not function if the QB isn’t disciplined. He has to trust his offense line and be patient. If 2/3 foundation have powerful the QB counter will succeed also.
Today 4/5 counter can be conducted by the back too. Frequently as soon as the buttocks defensive end sees backside linemen pulling he’ll close and the QB will get an chance to pull the ball. If a team would like to be successful in the disperse running game they must become efficient in the counter. It’s a miss route drama that retains the backside honest.

Often within linebackers will cross vital. Tendencies for many spread teams demonstrate a vast majority of time in the event the back is away the running play is coming to you. 1 way to keep them honest is to combine the running back’s alignment. Align the rear playside on counter a few. But if your group runs counter nicely this will damage them keying crossover tendencies.
The next running scheme is external zone. Outside zone retains defensive ends fair. And just as indoors counter and zone work collectively so can counter and out zone. Some teams won’t widen the finish but will use an outside linebacker to divide the difference between an interior receiver and the tackle. ( run 4 games is where the bubble is significant ).

Having success running outside zone will lead to defensive ends to expand making them prime targets to be pumped by yanking guards when conducting counter. The toughest kind of outside zone play and the toughest to time is that the jet sweep.
The QB will start the inside receiver in movement and before he arrives in the QB ball will be snapped and handed to him running full rate. After this play is perfected it opens up many different possibilities in the racing game and passing game. Offensive linemen will cut backside and stretch playside. It is simple for offensive line coaches to coach this. Teach your linemen to work into the playside arm pit and keep participated! It is a fast play and comprehension is about the only thing which can result in problems. Playside receivers play a massive part in the achievement of this play.
